ZW's Drawing Tutorial #1 (2D to 3D)

Hi everyone,

Since some of you do not have access to expensive 2D and 3D software for creating custom AM scenes. Once in a while... (I do mean once in a while!) I will post a tutorial on drawing simple things. Drawing can be simple if you know what to do.

My first tutorial deals with perspective. Making a 3D room with one piece of furniture. This can be done with most paint programs including the one, which comes free with windows.

I am not English, so if you do not understand what I am saying, just tell me and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

A friend of mine showed me this years ago on paper and I was trying to remember it. You can also move the horizontal line up and down and move the dot (center) left or right to create different perspectives.

Here is one I did with a different perspective. I re-added the dot after I ereased all the lines. This perspective is a bit extreme though, as if you were sitting near the ceiling. lol

Yes you are right, and you can also have more than one perspective points as well. However, I wanted to keep it simple.

On another note....this helps ALOT..you see the lines..that Steve drew..The side ones..Thats where i mess up..Mine go up to the point u are looking in Birds eye view...which isn't my intention..but I go with it..cause......I'm too tired to fight with it..or I get sick of fighting with it..

If you want to avoid having a bird's eye view, try to keep the perspective point in the middle. The point should be close to the height of your eyes. (Not really a scientific proof lol, but looks better!)

If we take pennsteve's picture, the reason why it looks a bit distorted is that the person would be quite tall if the point would indicate is eyes. (This would not leave much for the rest of his head and the person would be quite close to the left wall.) However, pennsteve's drawing is well done. It is just a bit weird for eye level camera view. So centering things in terms of height, would be best.

ZW..if u do add more..Can u put more furniture in this room..so i can get an idea of where u would put couch...or even how u draw one..I suck at those too..lol...I suck at furniture.. period..I mean i'm not too bad at drawing I have seen alot worse..I've only made 4 games so far..so..I have alot to learn there..Also im a creature of habit..So if its paint i started in..Chances are its paint i stay with..Anyhow..really cool of u to do this.. Thanks

Glad to know that you all find the tutorial useful. Well that is what tutorial posters aim and hope for I guess.

I will post more stuff, but I have no idea when.

mercedes, the next tut will deal with furniture on both sides of the room.

Lybero, 2 perspective points? Better yet, I will show a 3-perspective point. Simply put, 2 and 3 points go hand in hand. Not sure, a 3D tut would be that useful for AM.

Hi ZW..Would you put furniture in back of the coffee table..as though a couch was sitting in front of it there..Is that something you would do as well for this..? Just wondering..Like i turned it into a coffee table..as opposed to a bed..This last drawing I used this tut to help me with perspective point..Really helped with the floor...it was LEVEL..lol..

I would show it..its done..but i doubt its good enough to show here..It's ok for my game.. but There is no way i'm showing u...hahaha..I'm still not sure I like it yet..either..Was trying out new flooring..something I've done in real life..but in a picture was harder..

Point taken, but I am not too sure about that feature myself. I use Bryce for this, but it is done with just a click of a button. That is something I need to look deeper into, especially with Photoshop.

Ok..alright..but don't laugh..LOL..actually your free to laugh..Its not bad..just I'm not crazy about a few things in it..The couch for one..and I would have liked the flooring to look more like its flat..I'm terrible with furniture..and if i do get it..it takes me foreverrrr..

Anyways here it is..~ Still working on it..Also having issues with the safe on the wall..

For the safe, its at an angle. Create more of an oval than a circle for the dial part. Get a coin and hold it in front of you and then turn it to the side. Its now oval and not round.

pennsteve gave you good advice on the safe. Just make sure the inside circle is farter away. (More space near our view and less space on the other side, if you follow what I am saying!)

Your room in general is quite good. The floor needs to align the perspective point. (The planks that is!) The couch does not look that bad; it just needs to be a bit less long for the legs.

Hello ZW, just like to compliment you on this drawing tutorial. I don't have too much of a problem with the perspective myself, but my wife does, and I recommended your tutorial to her, and its proving very worth-while. I think sometimes those with a natural talent for creation loose sight of the ones who want to create but stuggle with producing the simplist graphics or backgrounds. Your tutorial really comes to the fore in this and thanks for making it available.
