How do you go about programming characters to talk/pickup/jump etc in your games? Do folk just use a gif animations (blocks w no transparency which overlay onto particular frames thus making it necessary to animate a pickup point for every frame with an object) pasted into the frame, or can you convert your sprite into something like a talking animation instead of a standard still/walking animation?

For 1st person games, I used to use the gif animation plugin, then I started using animation software to build the animation. I haven't worked with 3rd person yet, but I plan on trying it out soon (next few months).
