Adventure Jam 2017

Postby Simon » Sat Apr 08, 2017 10:31 am

In May there will be the adventure jam. Create a game in 2 weeks!
http://jams.gamejolt.io/advjam2017

I will try to participate with Adventure Maker in the Black Cube series, like I did for Myha last year.

I want to do the graphics only. I'm looking for people to:
- supervise the project (make the link between all the components of the team)
- develop/script/program the whole game in AM.
- do the audio (music and sound design)
- come with ideas (story and puzzles)

Anyone wants to make a team with me?

I'm in.
Can we design it ahead of time? 2 weeks is tight!

Maybe we can do something a little different...under water? Just throwing that out there.

Oh yes, a water planet! No island, no continent. Only water everywhere. I like the idea!

I think we can start gathering ideas (story, world, puzzles)
The theme of the Game Jam will be revealed at the very last minute, but we can work on a twist to stay in the course. Let's do the project that WE want to do!

How will the team work? If I work on the graphics, Bob do you feel at ease with the idea of working alone on the development? In 15 days??

Hi there!

I could not have avoided to read this thread...

There really is no theme, the only rule about it is that it has to be an adventure:

Look at number 2 ;)

I'll just keep the puzzles fairly simple. If time left at the end, I could add a unique one or make existing ones more complex.

The key will be having a great, detailed design & storyboard from the start so everyone knows their tasks.
If we have a storyboard with quick sketches for each frame, I can use these to build the puzzles while you build the graphics. As you finish the graphics, I can replace the backgrounds and props/hotspots with the finished work.
As the sound effects and voicing is done, I will add those. If we don't have volunteers for voicing, I can get a couple people to help (English).

We should shoot for 12 days to finish with 3 days for testing and fine-tuning.

That sounds great to me reneuend! Simple puzzles, storyboard, etc. This is good for me.

Maybe we can avoid to add voices? It's complicated in such a limited time.

Regarding the music we can use free royalty free tracks if we can't do a soundtrack in time.

The most important is to have the ideas, the graphics, and someone to put it all in AM.

Do you want to go with the Black Cube series world as a starting point? You talked above of a world under water. I like the idea and it is totally compatible with the Black Cube series.
Or do you prefer to work on something else?

According to what Juanjo said above, we can start thinking of the ideas already. Feel free to share your ideas, share visual references that you like (pick some photos on google and post them here), so that I can start to think of the challenge that awaits me :D
Then we'll try to sort everything in order to create the game. We have to try to make it short.

Do you want videos? (opening/ending...)
Should we do it 1st-person or 3rd-person?
If 1st, do we use static views or 360 nodes?
If 3rd, is it wise to use AM while there are plenty of other engines that look more suitable?

Along with the questions above, I would like to submit an idea for a game under water:

In my game Catyph, the hero visits a moon named Tytaah. Catyph was inspired by Saturn, and Tytaah was inspired by Titan.
Today I just found a news, saying that another moon of Saturn, Enceladus, could harbor life in its warm oceans:

(I saw it in French language on another website, but I think that the content here is globally the same)

So what would you say of making a game on a moon inspired by Enceladus?
It already gives me a lot of ideas, but I'd rather base the game on your own ideas :) Let me know what you think!

I like the idea on keeping it consistent with the black cube series. The only problem with using a different engine is I don't know how to use other packages. I'll do some research for some ideas. I just said underwater because it isn't done that much.

Sure let's go with AM, I'll be happy to keep using it.
What about the other questions? The idea with Enceladus?

I'm sorry guys, don't take it bad, but I think that I will participate to the Jam alone. It takes too much time to wait for replies on the forums, and we only have a very limited period to create the game. There are still many unanswered questions that I posted on last friday, and I hoped we could make faster progress regarding the story and the world of the game. Sorry, I'm not used to work in teams, probably I didn't ask the good questions or didn't manage to make you interested enough. I will now think of a project on my own, probably on Enceladus as I suggested before. I'll keep you updated of my progress in a dedicated thread if I decide to use AM.

Sorry Simon. I'm in the middle of a conversion at work = long hours. Maybe it's for the best. I have very limited time. I agree with using characteristics of Enceladus. Especially the users. That might even make a puzzle...using a geyser as an entry point into a warm water environment with everywhere else being cold. Perhaps an old civilization is under one of the guests and the geyser was used for its warming ability.
