Remembering a configuration

Postby workmac1 » Sat Mar 11, 2006 10:47 am

Hi,

I'm just getting started with AM and I could use a little help.

I have a panel consisting of five switches that can be manipulated by the player. When the switches are first viewed they are in an initial configuration. The player is able to change which switches are pressed. I want the game to be able to remember the final configuration so when the player returns to the switches the last known configuration is shown.

Hopefully this can be done without scripting.

Hi workmac1,

Yes, you can do that without scripting by using the options that are under the "variables" tab of the Hotspot Properties window.

I have a variable for each of the switches and I have them set up so that when a switch is on the others are off. I have a wide shot of the swithches and pictures for each possible configuration. The player starts with the wide shot, clicks the hotspot with the switches to zoom in, changes the configuration and then zooms out to the wide shot.

What I am having trouble with is when the player returns at a later time and zooms in the switches are reset to their initial configuration. I can't figure out how to the hotspot in the wide shot that zooms in on the switches to the picture of the last configuration.

Hi,

The variables are global and therefore they won't be reset unless you deliberately do so. Please make sure that the hotspot that leads to the zoomed image does not reset the variables (again, from the "variables" tab of the Hotspot Properties).

If you look at the sample game included in the AM package called "First person Example without scripting - The Closed Door", you will notice that there are switches, and their position is not reset when you come back.

I finally figured it out. I needed to have a hotspot for each possibility including the initial configuration and then stack them on top of each other.

Thanks for your help
