How to add/save text in a box?

Postby blackbear » Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:02 am

Hi

I would like to make a personal development game and am new to adventure maker, where the player can explore their beliefs and how they create their reality. Could anyone please tell me, how a player can add a large amount of text in game, where it could be saveD? The answers the player would add would depend on questions being asked too, so that would be important as well

thanks

Uh....

Not enough info. Full version, free version?

I'm not exactly an expert with AM, but maybe I can help you.

1. First person or 3rd person?
2. An input box? I'm afraid all coding is disabled in the full version, but you can have a pop-up come up, and you could add the text to the frame.

Hope this gets you started.

Ok. When you make a hotspot, go to the Actions tab, and then there should be some option like "Add some text.." or something like that. Select the pop-up choice and type your text in. When you click that hotspot, the popup will come up.

Hope this helps. :D

HI there... Welcome to the Forums..:D

To add text to a frame..where the user has to click it...and there be different answers..you would need the full version for this..For example..

Here are a couple of threads to help guide you..

http://www.adventuremaker.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3710&highlight=text+screen

I know there is alot there..It's text with dialogue with avatars..There is a demo on the first page..That u can download..to help better understand it..On the next page..it shows different ways of doing it...There are only 2 pages..but lots of scripting..Don't let it discourage you if it does..
On the second page..there is an option to have continual dialogue
Either way you are working with script and timed events..with text..

http://www.adventuremaker.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3854&highlight=text+screen

There is this one here too..it's just adding text on the screen..[It stays invisible till the user clicks it..] then once they do..an answer or hint appears..

Note you can evaluate the full version of AM..within a 20 Frame limit..:)

Please let us know if any of those help.. Or if u need any help with any of them..:D It might help more..If we knew exactly what it was u are trying to do too..:)

Anyhow..take a look at those threads..and let us know..~

Peace

Hi Mercedes

Thanks for the great help and reply. I am in the process of looking through the information

To explain better I would like to have quest spaces in the game, with a 'myst' like effect and environmental feel, where each quest covers an aspect of how we create our reality, one for example, is the reasons/definitions as to why we believe a certain belief e.g. "I am broke". Another quest may be exploring the pain that belief has brought on, another quest may be realizing how we have been responsible for creating beliefs all along

In each quest the player would then respond to the way the quest would draw out the inner world of the player, whether the quest/avatar/text box would ask questions or some other process of drawing out the technique. I am contemplating using the very cool flash presentations from prezi.com as an example of a really cool interactive presentation, but I think at this stage an avatar asking questions would be more than enough. This explains why I need the ability for the player to input and store probably a lot of text.

I would like to inbuild guided audio meditations in special 'healing' places of the game, so as to take the player on a closed-eyed voyage in exploring their reality and belief systems

Anything I could add to making it more interactive such as having emoticons or mini-symbols next to the players answers would make it really cool and more effective. A 'doodle' tool could also help the player express

Think of it as a playground where the more you play the more you change your reality for the positive and master your inner world

I would like it to play like a really fun and addictive rpg eventually, where instead of armour/rings the player would unlock new information/videos/audio lessons, as well as cool tools that act as a metaphor for their new skill, such as a gold-plated radio being a metaphor for how we "cannot perceive what we are not the vibration of"

I am open to paying/rewarding others to help me on this project because its a great passion of mine. Thanks again for the great feedback it is much appreciated

Best regards

Hm...I have to admit, I have never played Myst......I cannot imagine the gameplay with ''Beliefs''~ or how the player interacts with the game..where there are Beliefs~ As I don't play to many rpg games..

Perhaps someone else will come around that has played...Myst..or are more familiar with RPG's...They may be able to better guide you..:)

For storing text...do u mean like a note book..that the player can keep notes in..so that they can look to it later on,?
If so, you can work with notepad in the game..Also there is a Journal Plugin that has been developed as well...Still not sure if this is what you are looking for ....
Going by what you wrote in the above quotes..sounds like it might be either way i sent u already...But I'll give u this link as an added venture..:D

wow mercedes thanks so much the journal plugin is exactly what i was looking for!

yes i would like to have the players take notes in the game, such as in the journal

how would you recommend would be the best way for me to learn to use the software and become familiar with it, as my programming experience is limited to html and a bit of sierra arts click and play lol :) are there any video tutorials around or should i just use the help files

thanks so much for your help and to everyone else too who contributed, its a godsend and highly appreciated :)

No problem..:)
There are a few tutorials here for beginners..
Here's a great one...that will help and guide you into using AM..and variables..

http://www.adventuremaker.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3400&highlight=online+tutorial

Depending on what it is you are trying to do at that point in your game...There are many great puzzles in the Tutorial section of the forum..

Don't get too ahead of yourself..where scripting is concerned..[if your not familiar with it..]...start with variables first..and the menus..

I would suggest...Import frames...Create hotspots...learn the menus..Test your frames often..

When you come to a puzzle you want to try....Post back..and we'll help guide you through it.....Be it with variables or with Scripting..:)

Hope that helps..:D
