Vista and AM 3.5.2

Postby KirkAHub » Sun Mar 11, 2007 1:39 pm

I have a game in distribution and got an email from someone who purchased the game who says that they cannot install the game at all.

Here is their note:

"My install CD will not boot. Tried doing it maually, but when I click on setup exec. nothing happens. my computer freezes. I am running windows Vista. Please help."

I sent them a note to go to properties and look at the file sizes to make sure that there is no problem with the CD and to see if they can install the game in Windows XP compatibility mode.

Does version 3.5.2 work on Windows Vista?

Thanks, Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Yes, it does work... just installed 3.5.2 and compiled a game on Vista. I installed the game and launched it.

However same problem, no sound.

Did your user installed it by "Run as administrator" ?

Kind regards,

Thank you Shadow, I passed the run as administrator instructions on to my customer with the sad note that when he gets it running there will be no sound.

Is there any news about a patch that will fix the Windows Vista sound problem and if so will it work on AM 3.5.2? This is the first time a customer complained but as more and more folks move up to Vista I expect to have many more complaints in the future.

Thanks,

Kirk

Hi,

Alas as far as I know there is no patch possible :?

For example a piece of code in AM is:

MediaPlayer1.Play

For MediaPlayer in Vista this is:

MediaPlayer1.ctlControls.Play

So as you can see AM needs to be rewritten, however this means it no longer works with older versions.

Sorry, I hope to get a compatible Vista version of EZTalk out as soon as possible but I have to start from scratch in a language in don't master.

Yes, I also believe more complaints will come in as Vista takes over the marked

Kind regards,

One other thought, I do not have Vista to test this, but to install with Run as Admin and in Windows XP compatible mode, for a work around?

Also, I have not looked at EZTalk but could it be used as a fix for this? This is very depressing.

Hi,

EZTalk Vista will be a fix to play audio but by scritping (easy), the build-in audio engine of AM will not work in Vista.

But again, I have lots of trouble making EZTalk Vista. I'm now looking for another OCX player to use instead of Media Player but they all cost around 150$ and I don't think it may be redistributed

Well, the quest goes on :D

How about something in ogg files?
BTW couldn't find any links or banners to click for you on your page? maybe my blocker is stopping them?

Hi Candle,

Yes, I also thought about a Ogg player instead of MP3. I will try to find out more. Thanks for pushing me in this direction, I was afraid nobody would wan't this.

The Adds are not on the AM pages but on my portal site www.shadowhunter.co.uk thery should appear on top, it's an IFrame not a popup. Maybe something to do with security. Thanks anyway :D

I like ogg files myself so that would be better in my book.

Hi Candle,

I need your help... I cannot find a free OGG Player OCX which I need to make EZTalk work with OGG or to make it work at all

Please let me know if you or any other member are able to find it.

I just learned that you can't make OCX with Visual Basic .NET, if this is the case an update will be impossible.

I have mailed GM for his advice. I guess it's now up to this forum to find a solution for the sound problem in Vista.

I will nonetheless post EZTalk Vista but as I told before I experience sound cuts at the end and slow response.

Kind regards,

Hi Candle,

Whow that FMOD is incredible :D

I think I have only a few problems to overcome before I can start working with this.

Thanks for the great pointer !

I'll keep you updated.

I just want to add that I see no problem whatsoever about switching to ogg. Quite the opposite, actually. Good luck, Shadow.
