SimpleMenu plugin problem

Postby Mystery » Thu Nov 15, 2007 12:34 pm

I've used in my latest game the SimpleMenu plugin. There are no problems with European/US (English, German etc.) Windows versions, however there seems to be an issue with players using a Chinese version.

The player gets an error message just after starting the game, that the plugin couldn't be loaded:

And at hotspots in the game where the plugin is used, the player gets these error messages when they click the hotspot:

Any ideas if there is a solution for this problem, or can't games using the SimpleMenu plugin be played by players from Asia? :(

Unfortunately I have still not understood exactly where those characters problems come from.

I hope someone else can help more.

Does anyone know if there is a way to reproduce such problems on an English OS, like for example by changing some settings in the language preferences of the Control Panel, or by installing some Asian input methods, or something like that?

Installing East Asien languages would take 230 MB on my (old) laptop, and that's too much space for me :?

However, I've read about similar problems with Japanese, Chinese and Korean to use software properly, and I remember that there was a text passage about reproduction possibilities on US Windows if East Asien languages were installed. However, I can't remember the details, if any other settings had to be changed...

Also what is special about Japanese, Chinese and Korean, is that they are double-byte character set (DBCS) / multi-byte character sets (MBCS), in opposite to ANSI (U.S., Europe). So this could be a cause for decryption errors of codes.

I'm not sure if further search in this direction could reveal the problem.
I see if I can figure out something.

EDIT
I have no idea if it helps, but since the plugin is written in VB, and this article mentions language problems with VB and suggest to detect the language settings, perhaps it's useful: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232625/en-us
Otherwise ignore it ;)
