im trying to use a real picture for an icon instead of painting it myself. how can i do this? i have paint shop pro 9 if that helps but is there an icon editor that will let me to this and make the icon compatible with adventure maker?

I don't have Paint Shop, I'm using Irfanview to convert my files for inventory items.

Make sure you save it as .ico file, sometimes AM can be a bit picky with .ico files created by certain software or with a too big size.

Have you already tried to save it as .ico file (if that is possible with Paint Shop)?

EDIT
I just converted your .gif to .ico with Irfanview, and it's working well in Adventure Maker :)

psp9 doesnt let me save as .ico
is there some kind of file converter i can use?

As I said, I personally prefer Irfanview because the converted files are in 99% of the cases accepted by Adventure Maker, whereas this is not true if I do it with GIMP (maybe it's my fault though...).
I just converted your brush gif with Irfanview into .ico and it worked in Adventure Maker.
