Compiling Game

Postby fxrchick » Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:23 pm

I'm getting ready to compile my first game :D however, I'm getting an error message that a file is missing and setup won't be correct (I saw Mercedes had the same problem) I went ahead and compiled anyway and sure enough when I loaded the game it was searching for the project .exe file which wasn't there. I'm running Vista and AM 4.52. I would really appreciate any suggestions or fixes. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong..

I installed 4.61, copied over my project file from 4.52 then compiled. It worked like a charm. The .exe is in place and functioning.

I assumed the newest version was more for Windows7...which is why i hadn't thought of it...or didn't want too really..I have to pay for all downloads..uploads..data...I so miss DSL..:(

What I don't get..is that..I have compiled games before with this version..and..had no problems..

But..I'll try it..and see what happens..:)

**********

What do u mean u copied over your project file..It should have still been there...no.. ? Is that something you did just as a precaution..?...

Did you use windows Explorer to copy..and did you just paste it over top..of the folder..?

I would like to try exactly what you did..Thx..:)

I installed 4.61 without deleting 4.52 (as a precaution) Using Explorer I drug my project file from 4.52 into 4.61. I copied rather than moved so in essence I have the project in both versions. Remember the problem I had with the hot spots? Well, after having to rebuild 3 times I am really cautious :D :D
I removed my desktop shortcut for 4.52 so I wouldn't get confused.
I hope this helps!

Problem Continues - Missing Set Up File

Postby fxrchick » Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:25 am

Unfortunately upgrading to 4.61 was a short lived solution. I've attached a screen shot of the error which occurred this evening. Does anyone have a fix for this? :D

That's the same error..right..?...Thats the one I was speaking of as well..It's as soon as you click..compile..

Is it the same file that is missing...? project.exe

I wonder if there's any chance to narrow down which file is missing.. And why.. Why are some of us getting this silly error..?? :?

I've compiled games before...I don't' remember that happening..But they were with an earlier version..

I wonder if it would go away with a previous version..for instance, 4.4...I think it was..?

Can't remember..but i had the one before 4.52...and I loved that version...never had any problems with it...

GM sent it to me a long time ago..and i can't find it anymore..But i would be almost willing to dl that one again..

Does this happens with all of your projects or just with one?

This has happened to me a few times when I was using an older version project in the latest version of AM. I think (could be wrong) I fixed it by reloading it in the older version of AM. I really cant remember. I always keep a backup of my projects, so I may have just restored it from my backup. I wish I would have recorded what happened and how I fixed it.

I know it's fixable, but I don't remember how I did it. The funny thing is, I've done it more than once.

Hope you get it resolved.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the project itself or withe the setup compiler.

When exactly does the error appear?

The error occurs when I start to create the .exe for my project so I believe it has to do with the compiler. I was having the problem when I had 4.52 installed, as was Mercedes. I upgraded to 4.61 which worked at first (see prior entries in thread) but then last night I started getting the error message again. I would try reloading a prior version of AM but unfortunately being new to this 4.52 is the oldest version I have. I don't know what to look for in the compiling code...I'm stumped and don't know what to do.

It would be interesting if this also happens with an other project. Could you try to make another project with just 2 or 3 frames and some hotspots and create an exe from it?

Are you using scripting in your game?

Is the game playable without errors from out of AM?

If you want you can send me your project folder to see if I'm able to create an exe without error.

I think its one of the following:
- missing file just like the error says
- compiler is expecting a file at a certain location (wrong location)
- bad or missing registry setting
- corrupted file
- no admin access to a file

Since you have Vista, I wouldn't doubt if its an admin access issue. Try this:
Right-click on Adventure Maker icon and click on "Run as Administrator". Then try to compile it.

If it's an admin access issue it should be happen everytime with every project. And if I remember right, Mercedes is using XP

fxrchick is using Vista and has only one project. The post was directed to her issue. It's very possible that Mercedes and fxrchick are experiencing similar results due to an entirely different reason. If I owned Vista or Win7, I wouldn't focus strictly on the same diagnostics as someone using XP.

Fxrchick, if the test I asked you to perform doesn't fix it, you might try building a very simple project that maybe just has 1 hotspot and a message or something. Compile it and see if it works. The less assets the easier it is to diagnose.

I did try "admin" with no luck..I've got to get to work..much rather be here figuring this out. When I get home I will start the process of elimination using your suggestions. Thank you so much for the help! :D :D

If after trying the simple project,

It works:
- then I would suggest creating a new project and use Lyberodoggy's AM Project Management tool to copy the frames from the "broken" project to the new one. BUT!!!! Be sure to test after each frame is added and don't just add everything at once.

I have a couple more questions: Did you use any plugins? Did you do any scripting?

One more question to both fxrchick and mercedes: Did you work on your project in a different version of AM before this issue occurred?

I truly appreciate yours and juhuwoorps help. I tried compiling one of the sample games - same error, I had created a small game with the free version - same error. Prior to dismantling my game I decided to reinstall 4.61. The compiler is now working..I had copied the compiler code when it errored out and I've copied the compiler code now that it's working. I can email the files to you if you think that will help. I'll let you know if it errors out again. THANK YOU AGAIN!

Please help me with the history of this project.

What version did you use when you first created the project?
What version did you use when it failed to compile?
Did you simply reinstall the same version and it corrected it?

It does happen with other projects..

Yup..

Is the game playable without errors from out of AM?

Not sure..it might be..I've played mine..and it seems to be..But i never get a chance to play it all the way..for other errors..

I think it has to do with 4.52.. the compiler....Pretty sure we are getting the same error..

I have a feeling that if we designed the project with 4.52...that the fix is short lived..

Also, something tells me..that any new project here on in...made with 4.61..should be fine..

..I wish i could get a prior version..
