Delayed sounds

Postby Paul.S » Mon Feb 15, 2016 2:12 pm

Hi everyone.

A problem I've been having with sound effects is that they only play after a seconds delay. I know this doesn't sound so bad, but when, for example, moving through a door, it means that you're already on the other side of it when you begin to hear a door handle sound. Is there any way to remove or reduce this delay? I've tried editing the sound files so there is no delay in the file, just a slow response time when clicking a hotspot with the sound effects applied to it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul

I've never experienced a delay. Have you tried playing any of the games that people offer here to see if you still experience it?
Can you upload a small sample game (not compiled), so it can be analyzed?

How do I upload a sample game?

I have had a look at some other games made with AM, all of them have delayed sound effects.

Lets get some information first.

What kind of game are you making? Windows, HTML, ???
If Windows, does the delay occur after you compile the game to an "exe"?
What sound file types are you using?

The other AM games you've played in the past, were they compiled (exe) MS Windows games?

I have to ask this. Is there a delay in the sound file itself? If you don't have a sound editing software tool. Download "Audacity" at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
With the sound editing tool, you can see if there is blank space at the beginning. If there is, you can remove it and save the file.

Can you show you system information for your computer? Not your Windows Product Key!

The game is being made for windows 10. The delays occur on all sounds before and after compiling into a .exe. I'm using mp3 files edited with Audacity to remove any delay in the sound file itself. All other AM games I've played have been compiled for windows as a .exe.

System info is:
Windows 10 Home

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4010U CPU @ 1.70GHz
1.70 GHz

4.00GB RAM

64-bit operating system x64 based processor

Gasp! :?

I've never experienced or heard of this issue before this.
Anyone else have a suggestion????

4 GB RAM is bare minimum. I wonder what the load is on your system while using AM?

Try this:
Go to Task Manager ( CTL + SHIFT + ESC )
Open the Performance Tab
What is your CPU usage? the Memory usage? ....etc....

Have you tried compiling and playing a game that you made on a different computer?
If you would like me to try one out, upload either a compiled project or just the project files in a ZIP file.
There are numerous sites that offer free file storage on the internet.

Free internet storage sites I've used: flipdrive, mediafire, dropbox

Load on the CPU and memory is negligible, CPU us is 1.4%, memory use is 11.5mb. Below is the URL for a sample that I've uploaded to Dropbox. It's just a simple example, using assets that are included with AM. It's the switching a light on tutorial, with a light switch sound added. On my laptop it plays a second after being clicked and switching to the new frame.

I'm not getting a delay using the sound you sent me. I did load it in Audacity and removed the little bit of dead space at the beginning. However, it made no noticeable difference. I'm not sure if it skewed the test, but the project files you uploaded didn't have the necessary Project .dat file. At any rate, I created a project and used the sound that you sent along with a modified version of it.

I have a possible workaround. Have you ever used KeyGuard plugin?
You could detect when the left mouse button is "down" and then play the sound. I have no way of knowing if this would change the results because I'm not having the issue.

Using Keyguard seems to have solved it, it brings the click, transition and sound into line. Phew! Glad that's sorted.

It's great to be able to discuss things and find a solution. Once I have something to show of my game I'll post here so you can see what I've been up to :D

Awesome! Great job hanging in there. I love KeyGuard. There is so much you can do with it. Looking forward to seeing your project.
