Save the Earth - extended version

Postby Mystery » Thu Aug 10, 2006 1:33 am

I finished an extended version of my new game. :)
This is a rather difficult game, I admit it. You have to keep your eyes open, take notes of everything that might be important at a later time and use your brain.

The plot:
Your mom has been kidnapped by aliens. They want you to provide them information that allowes them to destroy the Earth. Your task is it to save the Earth and your mom, and to get back home safely. Of course there are many puzzles to solve and the correct decisions to make to succeed.

EDIT (August 11):
Finally I found some time tonight to set up my new homepage at my new host and upload my games there. So you can use this link to download a fixed version of Save the Earth:
http://www.mysterys-games.ch/

Please notify me if you find any bugs (there is so far 1 issue that some symbols might disappear from your inventory - but you can click on a hotspot to get them back - no idea why this can occur in rare cases).

And of course also your general feedback is much appreciated :)

Game looks good. What did you use for the soundtrack? I got stuck on the part where I entered the room with the "2" on the door. Can you provide a walkthrough sometime? Thanks.

Thank you for playing it :)
I took soundtrack from www.freeplaymusic.com

Well, I'm going to provide a walkthrough very soon. I just finished the game and didn't have the time to write one yet.

So, you're at your neighbor's flat? Just look around (look to the right from the mirror) and you may find something useful.

Alright. Thanks. I Appreciate it.

I happened to encounter a bug in your game. When I enter mom's house, I can't exit.

-Never mind. That was intentional.

Okay, for those who get completely stuck, I posted a walkthrough in the corresponding subforum (hopefully I remembered everything).
I still hope that some of you manage to solve all puzzles without help

Hi Mystery,

Finshed or better BEAT the game :D

First of all congratulations, you have made a very nice game featuring tons of neat stuff... and as good as bug free.

I would like to make some additions the "player voices:"

The good:

- Very creative game
- Various locations with there own fitting atmosphere
- Great choise of music
- Very nice of you to implement clues
- Puzzles are not to hard, not to easy... the way I like it
- Very innovating puzzle with the audio file, worked very well for me
- Beautifull flash implementation
- Good soundeffects and voice distortion
- You used a prologue and an epilogue which are key's to a good game

Things to improve:

- Once a key is used keep the door open (variables)
- Save and Load must be enabled (I'm sure this was done for a reason)
- When clues are missed, sometimes no return to see them again
- Uniform drawing (last frames of the game = just wonderful)

Small bug:

You need to unload the textbox control upon leaving the frame instead of unloading it when clicking the button. I have tried leaving the frame withouth pressing it and the control stays visible.

In conclusion: a very good creation Mystery... you defenitaly got what it takes and I can't wait to see your next project. You are really talented...

Keep on going and thank you for adding my to the credits :D

I'm going to add a link to your site on my pages right away...

Kind regards,

ShadowHunter,

Thank you very much for your review! I'm very glad that you liked this game :D

And I agree with your suggestions for improvement and also your bug detection completely - I see all the points you mentioned.
I'm going to make some improvements on this game following your advice.

For the save option: I did use it in previous games, but had some negative feedbacks (inventory not loading at all or only partially loading), so I want to experiment with it before I enable the save function which would be of course a very nice and important feature for a rather difficult game like this without walkthrough.

I'm very determined to learn more VBScript and also learn to use animation software much better - as my goal is to realise a rather professional project in 2-3 years (I still need to create some experimental games where I can try out things  ).

But I am very content with the reactions of a lot of players who have followed my progress from the very beginning and who give me very much motivation to put my free time (usually the nights...) to learn new things and make games.

And of course your nice words give me also a lot of motivation to continue (with the hope for future support from you to be able to progress with my skills). :D

Thanks again!

Sorry for the double post, but I hope that it is accepted for a new announcement:

I have done some improvement on this game: :D
- Fixed the small bug that ShadowHunter detected (unload control)
- Kept doors open once that the keys were used.

For the other things to improve: It would be a too big affair to apply them on this game, but I'll keep ShadowHunter's comments in mind for my forthcoming games. :)

And I have finally found the time to set up my brand new homepage at my new host, so that you can download the fixed version from here:

Thanks a lot :D
It's just a basic homepage set up in a hurry and there will be some improvements as soon as I really have the time for such "luxurious" things

I aggree with what ShadowHunter said plus I would use the arrows in all the frames or none of the frames.
Try to keep it consistent, some of the sounds didn't make sences to me like clicking on the drawers sounds.
The image in the tv didn't fit.
But I like the game and can't wait for the next one.

Whats good is to play a few of the older adventure games and see how they work things out.
