Get Out Of The Dark - Windows - KeyGuard4 Demo

Postby reneuend » Wed Apr 22, 2009 9:28 am

Get Out Of The Dark
Another example of using KeyGuard4's Image Cursor

DOWNLOAD LINK AT BOTTOM!

This is a short demo of using an image cursor that works as a light source.
Unlike the light affect plugin, you can see the light source and also pick up items. If I have time, I will also animate the light source.

Available by this coming weekend! :)

Image
Who will go out first? You or the match!

(Update)

Another KeyGuard Test:
I set up the game so you can use 2 hands. You use the "H" key to toggle between left or right hand depending on which one you want to be active. It moves the image cursor pointer to that spot on that hand/tool. It works perfect, but it's very hard to keep track of everything!

Image
About to Enter the Crypt. Which hand would you have active?

Next up:
-Animating the image cursor
-Custom Inventory
-Release it to the forum to see if this design is too awkward

Did I say demo? Yes, I sure did! I pulled some of the frames from the actual project and created this demo project. This is just a very short demo to show you how I'm using KeyGuard4 in this project. When it's finished, I release the full version here. As always, comments are very appreciated.

Seems cool :)
Hopefully we 'll see these techniques in other projects too.

You know what would be really cool..I wonder if Keygaurd 4 could be used for this..or at least be a stepping stone for it..The cursor idea....as you have cleverly pointed out, using the cursor as a light source..It would be neat if we could do the same thing, but as a magnifier..You may need an Active X component for it..But we must have it on our systems..being as we can zoom in- in most applications..like Paint..ect..If not, I really hope one day someone would develop this..to me this would seem like the way to start.. and you look like the man for the job..! :D:D:lol:

I'm still pushing for the Alphablend in a hotspot..lol..Both of these features would be really cool in AM..But the magnifier..that would be a huge...IMO..:D..Other than animated cursors..--which i see u are going to include in this upcoming game..That'll be awesome to see as well..~ :D

Peace

Thanks, 3D and Mystery!

Lyberodoggy: I was thinking the same thing! The only problem I would have is how to make the opponent move or it would be too easy! :)

Mercedes: I was thinking about the magnifier when I was trying to come up with something for the rifle scope. The alternative is when the user takes the magnifying device and clicks on a hotspot to go to a new frame and then ONLY show that hotspot up-close using the image cursor much the same way I did with the light effect and the rifle scope. But to have a magnifier plugin would be awesome.

ShadowHunter or Lyberodoggy would have a better chance at figuring that one out! :)

FYI:
(or I just had to tell someone!)
I tried swapping image cursors using a key command. Ouch! It's too sensitive. So I tried the mouse wheel! Works great! :)

DEMO READY FOR DOWNLOAD!

Inventory: Use the mouse scroll wheel to change inventory items.

Ooops, missed it, too. Downloading as well :)

I had a bit problems with controls (opening the window and the car). I had to play 3 times to get the hang of it :)

Nice demo :)

Thanks for the info. Mystery. :)
I think the pointer coordinates are incorrect when the game first starts. It corrects itself when you cycle through the inventory using the mouse's scroll wheel. I'll correct it in the full game release.

Just to be clarify: This demo demonstrates the use of KG4 as a different way of having an inventory via the mouse scroll wheel.

I have other plans for this game:
- if you use the wrong object, it will respond accordingly.
- if you hover over something with an object (image cursor), I'll change the image cursor to reflect a specific motion.
- and of course, I'll update it so that I'm using animated cursors.

When I have it perfected and if anyone is interested, I'll share the subroutines I'm using for this as a template for anyone who wants to build a similiar style game.

This might have been the case.
When I played it for the first time, I didn't scroll through the inventory when I was in the car. I was trying to get out, and thought that I had to use them outside. This first time I had really troubles with opening the window or the car door. :)

Hi Reneuend,
Your demo looks great! I can't wait to play the game.
I couldn't grab the match box on top of the fence though...so I couldn't light a match. I tried several times, with both hands. It's a great concept though, can't wait to see more of it!
How did you get the window to roll down like that? Was that a short movie?

Were you holding anything when you tried to grab the object?

This story is actually quite long, so I don't expect to be out until...oh...how about Halloween! :) By then, I should be able to animate some of the KeyGuard Image cursors.

The window is a series of images. I used the gifplayer plugin to animate the "jpg" images!

I'm glad you liked it. I'm hoping to see others use this amazing plugin from ShadowHunter.

I have another idea on how to use Keyguard Image cursors, and when I get a chance, I'll share it too!

Hi Reneuend,
I wasn't holding anything.
When I was in the car I was able to scroll through and see all of the different cursors. Then I opened the window and heard the cat, so I opened the door and got a message saying I left my items in the car. I saw the match box on the fence...first the pic was very clear, and then it went very pixelated and dark. It did make it look like I was standing in the dark...cool idea.

Wellllll....you should have been able to pick it up! It's actually a flashlight sitting on the cement post. :P I'll see if maybe the mouse pointer coordinates are incorrect.

Saw this before, but I've been super busy!

Looks like a really cool concept, R-man. I'll see if I can try it out this weekend.
