How do you get to be a critic?

Postby AncientRein » Thu Sep 21, 2006 2:15 am

How do you get to be a critic?
Its amazing isn it.
Pehaps they attend know it all university?
ahh good ol K.U.

anyways , i was just reading a glowing review
of my game over at adventuregamers and it made me laugh.
Do they realize what goes into making a game?
They can give it a zero for all i care , i just wished
they bothered to follow the story line , understood what
it takes to create graphic , sound and then code puzzles all
by yourself.
Pehaps they shouldnt play the game with their heads up
their butts.
it might help a little.

Those that can make games do , and those that can't are critic's.

Lol, Candle :)

AncientRein, I have read it, and I can understand your frustration very much.
In such cases I recommend to take some distance first, and think about it once again at a later time. Take ideas out of it, where you see chances for improvement yourself. And leave the rest.

Hi AncientRein,
Reviews are by nature so subjective. Remember that the review is the opinion of only one person. Adventure Gamers is a major adventure site and, out of all of the zillions of independent games, they chose to review yours --- a mixed blessing, considering what they wrote, but still, they considered your presentation worthy enough to be reviewed at all. And shoot... they only gave Alida a 3, Rhem a 2 and even the original Myst only rated a 4!

Maybe try to look on the positive, and use the critique as a tool for making your next game better. Success is the best revenge.

Hi,

Yes... such an article on a major adventure game site is an accomplishment on it's own.

Don't worry... at the least your name is in the running and labled as "promissing" :D

I say: GOOD JOB and keep writing !

Kind regards,

People from my experience tend to dwell on negative aspects on things, rather than the positive things.

Though this may be too harsh, when someone makes too harsh a criticism, I think sometimes, if you can do better let me see it.

I have released a demo of my game. I have had more complaints about it than direct positive comments, yet on the other hand indirectly I have had about 300 downloads. people who have downloaded it have rated it 3 out of 5 which is quite good. It also got the editors pick.

Sometimes people are lazy and want a game how they want it and sometimes fail to see you do things for a reason, ie the plot, location.

If you fix everything they don't like, then your game becomes theirs in the end and your original idea becomes some else. Though I still listen and fix important gameplay issues.

I was thinking about this somemore and a game that I highly lookup to and game maker I wish I could be as good some day and they get a review like that!
What would they say about a game I did? I'm afraid now to even do a game.

Nice to see you released your demo MarkSA , good luck with it.

thanks for your support everyone i really appreciate it.
Its a good thing i'm thick skinned i guess regarding this bizzare
review. Some of the things mentioned were off the mark
and a little strange. objects in the inventory , spelling and so on.
Wonder why they even bothered if they hated it so much.
their referal to a "slideshow" game perhaps was a clue
as most of us just call them first person adventures
or even myst type games perhaps this reviewer only likes
3d engines. By the way the magnifier is combined with
the map in the inventory so one could see where they are
so it actually does do something unlike the reviewers comment.
Objects in the inventory have a text description and the game
text was run through spell checkers before used unless
i missed something , i'm still lookin.
Even a comment about not having fun , sheesh
He really went out of his way to come up with negative
remarks.

well , theres no where to go but up i guess
lol

thanks

Thanks AncientRein,

I also read the review on AdventureGamers. Reviews can be subjective and based on the reviewers bias.

People should at least try a game/demo for themselves.
