I am currently creating a program that will teach the user how to handcode in notepad and other html programs and I was curious to find out if there's a way to allow the user to type in characters.

Hi,
Yes there is... I have posted a small demo that uses a VB-control some time ago. You can download it from here:
http://www.shadowhunter.co.uk/downloads/inputbox_script_1.0.zip
As you will see you can type text into the box. Just make it bigger and define some properties. (you can look them up at any VB-page on the web for example "word wrap" property)
