Are you good at maths? (lol)

Postby Chromegloss55 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 6:52 pm

A very random topic I know... but it's applicable...

Basically they say that many people who are good at making games, programming or have an interest in computers are quite good at maths.

Is that true I wonder!

I decided to start a very basic poll to find out...

I consider myself good at maths and currently I 'm building a game on them...

Are you? What game is it? :)

As for using maths in my games, I find myself quite limited by the confines of VBScript.

VBScript doesn't seem to support calculus in any shape or form. I was hoping to use differential equations to work out experience points rather than having to rely on huge complicated formulae.

If I could use calculus, then the rate at which experience is gained could be based on the rate at which stats are gained for a particular character. The constant of integration would provide further control (C = Level of the character).

Sadly, I'm stuck doing it the old fashioned way...

Indeed, it would be quite useful!

Hmm, I m familiar only with greek math terms so I don't know what calculus is...

My game isn't that complicated. I just want the user to get his brain work faster and faster, by having him answer random equations in a specified time length.

I consider myself good at maths. Especially practical maths.

Your game will be practical, my brain got lazy with math over the years... ;)

I hade to do advanced trig last year in 6th grade! I'm swear I'm not lying! This year I do quadratic functions, inequalty graphing and solving, and linear/ exponential functions. Next year: advanced geometry

Sounds pretty tough for somebody who's 13. :D

It gets even more interesting when you move into doing stuff like abstract inequalities, modulus inequalities, limits of a function, matrices, binomials, differential and integral calculus, trigonmetric identities, discrete mathematics (proabibility), complex numbers, transformation geometry, vectors and all that kind of other stuff.

If you choose to do Maths (or Applied Mathematics) in university, you'll move onto doing things mathematical modelling and multivariable calculus, linear and vector fields and other kinds of weird and wonderful stuff.

And in response to my own poll, yes I am quite good at maths. :)

I 've done those + trigonmetric identities for sure

Trigonmetric identities are very useful when programming 3d games...
