Photos or 3D photo-realistic backgrounds that I can make, work for me. :)

I tried different types
- my own drawings: AWFUL :P
- Google SketchUP: Not bad, I think for the simplicity to use it, it does a good job
- 3D software: Yes, I prefer that, but to create nice backgrounds, you need to invest a lot of time and patience to learn to use 3D software

I painstakingly draw mine with PaintShopPro or Corel Painter...it takes HOURS! :(

If you use the right tools, SketchUp is not only easy to use but a very great program.

For a good free renderer for SketchUp, you should check out Kerkythea. With some downloads from their website, you can set SketchUp to work with Kerkythea Rendering System and it works marvelously. Here is an example of what can be easily done (I made it and use it as my desktop background) :

Yes, I remember that you've told us about this possibility, but I forgot.

I've found this guide on this topic:

I create some from scratch..others I create from an existing background picture..and edit it to what i want it to look like..By using either textures or objects..and importing them right into my picture..
I'm not one for a plain background..I prefer lots of activity going around..Or at least fill the picture up..I'm not great at drawing really, but I love to draw....I prefer to make 3D pictures with 2D aps..I do things the hard way..lol..

I use PhotoImpressions
Gimp
Paint*--I always start here..:P

Later..:D~

Say, reneuend, do you think using a 3D program to at least help you set up your scene perspective and item placement may help with designing your 2D drawings? By just using primitive shapes (cube, sphere, cone, etc.) as placeholders, you may be able to set things up before you commit to drawing to see if you like the perspective or not. It may help speed things up.

Just thinking out loud... :)

Hey Mercedes,

That's why I got into doing 3D; I could have the option of creating both 2D and 3D images fairly quickly and once I was finished with a 3D scene, I could view it and render if from different angles, perspectives and use different textures, colors, etc. I don't have to start from scratch when I want/need a different look. So that is a big plus for me when using 3D.

:)

Cya!

I don't (draw any graphics)
The only ones I 've ever made were those of shooting field, made with sketchup (which sounds just like ketchup the way I pronounce them)

SketchUp really is a great program- and it's about as easy as 3D modeling programs get. Observe- this was made entirely in SU, with only one plugin, and a renderer.

Nice Work, Zenoc... (you're probably desensitized to my saying this all the time).
I guess I just need to watch some videos on how you guys use this stuff!

It depends on what is needed. If you look for realism, go with photos. If it is about fantasy or sci-fi go with either paint or 3D and if it is toons, draw and color them.

In the end it is all about presentation, style and mood related to your project.
