Contest

Postby Mystery » Thu Oct 11, 2007 9:38 am

Dear forum members and AM users,

Harvester and me are organizing the 3rd AM contest. And here are the guidelines.

Topic:
You can choose one of the following topics:
1) Frozen
2) Snowball Effect
You are free to use any title for your game, and also to interpret the topic that you choose in your own way. However, for the jury and other players it MUST be obvious that one of the topics determines the storyline.

Further criteria:
The game must be created with AM (any version)
The game can be 1st person or 3rd person
Teams are allowed (however there is only 1 prize for the team)
You need to announce your participation in this thread
Only games for Windows or iPhone / iPod touch (no PSP)
PG rated (can have blood, dead bodies etc., but no nudity)
Max. size: 50 MB
Language: English

Deadline:
January 31 2008

Prizes:
1st prize: full version of AM (commercial licence)
2nd prize: full version of AM (non-commercial licence)
Thanks to GM for the prizes for the contest :D

Jury in alphabetical order:
Candle
Harvester
Mystery
(other judges are welcome, please contact us if you would like to become a judge)

Please post in this thread if you are planning to enter the contest, withdrawal is possible at any time.
If you don't have Adventure Maker yet, you can download it here for free.
If you have any questions about the contest or would like to be a jury member, please post in this thread.
This post will be updated if there is any important new information about the contest, so check back regularly.

We wish you a lot of fun creating your games, and hope that there will be a couple of entries this time :)
Good luck! :D

UPDATE:
The jury will try to play the submitted games without help, however being stuck for days (or even not being able to finish) would make it difficult to judge the games.

Therefore, we need a walkthrough for each game submitted to the contest.
- If you would like to give a public walkthough, you can post it here, and leave a note about it in this thread.
- If you don't wish to give a public walkthrough, please send one to each jury member by PM.

UPDATE2 (January 26):
Please contact Candle by PM to get the ftp info in order to upload your game.

I agree with Mytery, the more participants the better the contest is :) So feel free to join the contest... if the prize wouldn't motivate previous winners, just think of the pride and fame you gain by another win :)

I think

Postby Harvester » Fri Oct 12, 2007 1:17 pm

I hope I won't talk a rot but let me say it is not a contest like the ones before I guess. You've got these two topic words, 'frozen' and 'snowball effect' and you can implement anyhow in your game. You shouldn't be confused: I guess you know exactly what they mean, just think over what comes to your mind connected to this and make a game, it's how it works :)

Thank you Harvester, this is absolutely correct. :)

Since it seems that there are some confused members, I would like to add a little explanation and hope that it will help you to understand it more:

We would like to give you the freedom to be creative in this contest. You can choose one of the topics, and give it your own interpretation (however, this interpretation must be obvious to the jury and other players!)

Let's take another example to illustrate what is meant (I don't want to give examples here for the real topics of the contest in order not to influence your creativity). If the topic was Cross, you could create a storyline around e.g.
- the symbol of Christian Cross or
- the plus sign in math (addition) or
- the organization of Red Cross that helps in an emergency situation or
- crossroads (for example something happens at the intersection of streets or people from different areas of the town meet there by coincidence)
- etc.

So now you can build your storyline with either your interpretation of the topic "Frozen" or of the topic "Snowball Effect".
I hope that it clears it a bit for you :) In case you have any questions left, or are unsure about something, don't hesitate to post.

I hope graphics don't influence the judging too much :D .

Anyway, I'll enter. Is there a disadvantage if I only have the free version?

Great! :D

I assume that the jury will pay attention to several points, and graphics is certainly one of them. However, this is a contest for hobby game creators, so that you don't have to make professional looking 3D screens. I think it's just important to see that you've put some effort into the graphics, no matter what software you are using to create your 2D or 3D rendered screens.
But of course also the overall idea, the storyline, the creativity, the gameplay etc. will count a lot. So don't let yourself discourage because of the graphics :)

Since the prizes are full versions of AM, game creators with the free version are very much encouraged to participate in this contest!
Of course you are able to use less features if you use the free version, but if you have a good idea and an interesting game, that's fine :)

Good luck for your game! :D

I hope too that with Mystery's explanation it is clear for everyone.

About the judgement and evaluation:
As in previous contests the judgement will be dependent on many-many points. I can tell you that graphics do not worth more than anything else, it is just as a basic point of evaluation as gameplay, story, atmosphere, music, sounds, etc. (I won't list them all, let this be the secret of the Brotherhood of Judges :) ) So if you are not the best in something (let's say you can't get the appropriate music or compose your own, or you don't use good soundeffects, just to get away from the example of graphics...) you still have the same chance as a goodlooking game, as that goodlooking game might be boring an empty... so the main point is that if you are not good at something, then try to do the best in what you are good :)
Good luck, brave gamemakers for this contest.

Just a little addition to this for the users of the free version of AM:
Since version 4.2, it is possible to evaluate the advanced features of the Full Edition. However in that case your game is limited to max. 20 screens.
If you would like to use more than 20 screens, you need to create your game without the advanced features.

Both groups have a real chance in this contest, don't worry :)

For all who use the free version, we can compile an .exe version if necessary. :)
And thanks Candle for your offer :)

Okay count me in. The time given to make the game this time is much more realistic. I will participate as I have been broke lately and winning a full version would be cool. :)

I was wondering something and maybe this should go to another tread, however it would be cool if we could actually upload our games here. Any chance GM would consider hosting the games if they are not too big?

I would be happy to host your games, but at this time I am short of bandwidth (I even have to ask people to kindly host AM free edition itself...) :?

Maybe some other members have some spare bandwidth for uploading games...

No problem, I was suggesting this so it would be easy to find all games submitted for AM. All on one page. :) Mystery seems to have something in mind. :D

I moved the first "it's coming soon" messages into this other separate topic, so that the AM website can directly link to the contest description.

After discussion with the jury members, I also added "iPhone / iPod touch" as possible target platforms.

Note: the iPhone / iPod touch games can be played on any web browser, so you can play the created games on your computer: you don't need to have the actual device.

Thanks GM :)

Dear contest participants, as you can see, there is some news:
For the first time of the contest history, you can also submit a game for iPhone / iPod touch apart from a game for Windows.

We hope to receive a a lot of entries in this contest!
And good luck to everyone who is working on a game to submit :)

Hey, why don't you try www.ucoz.com It's easy & it's great.

Just look in my site. It is ~Love to~ PROFESSIONAL. sss13x.ucoz.net.

You can use FTP clients too and unlimited bandwidth.

You can even make a indivisual site for each game.

Hi Shafayat,

Thanks for your idea :)

However, by checking the site, I've seen that only 100 MB space are for free. The games for the contest may be up to 50 MB each, so that with 2 games, the space would be already filled, and we would have to pay to get more space (or sign up for different accounts).
I think that we have enough space and bandwidth on our servers to host the games. For this contest, Candle is going to do this.

But I think this site a great idea for people who would like to have their own website for free with a lot of extras :)
