What game consoles do you have?

Postby Chromegloss55 » Sat Aug 16, 2008 8:47 pm

Hey! Just wondering... what games consoles do most most people round here have?

I'm not so much into playing games as making them... but, well you've gotta get your inspiration from somewhere...

Xbox 360s seem to be all the rage... well... out of all two people who already answered (LOL :D )

I have a Xbox 360, I just hardly ever get a chance to use it because I'm always doing other stuff...

Errr... I haven't really gotten round to releasing any. Not for AM anyway...

I am working on a few including Haciendo Isla, Furtive, Enemy Catch and Connect 4, so hopefully you'll be able to see some of my work soon. At the moment I'm just focussing on getting the 100 VB Techniques and a few plugins done.

Ps2

Postby Harvester » Sun Aug 17, 2008 10:09 pm

I'm a happy owner of a PS2, which I don't use very often, but there are some exclusive titles for it (at least they were exclusive before the nextgen consoles) like Burnout, God Of War, Soul Calibur, Tekken, etc... mainly I use my PC for gaming. Nowadays only for playing older games since my machine is not really up to date.... now Fallout rules at me :)

Ahh... the Wii. How Nintendo let me down... :(

They used to be all about making great games like Zelda and Mario (they still make them, admittedly), but it's mostly about this 'lifestyle' image, how many celebs can we get to play crappy half-baked games?

I think Microsoft is the best for pure gaming at the moment...

game cube, ps, ps2, psp and now ps3 because some of my favourite games are still PS3 exclusives, and there are lots of new interesting titles that I can't wait to get my hands... :D

Hm I don't like PS3..

Anyway, I forgot to mention I have three handhelds:
GameBoy Color, Gameboy Advanced SP and Nintendo DS

Anyway, I was disappointed by Microsoft because of the windows Vista (they are so lame)

I was also disappointed because of their decision to make Halo 2 for PCs a Vista-only game, even though that wasn't necessary. And from their attempt to make us pay monthly subscription for our favourite games' multiplayer parts (See windows Live service)

I also hate Microsoft and Greece because X-Box Live isn't available here YET!

I'm not too sure about PS3 either...

As for Microsoft not having Xbox-Live in Greece, that's just disgraceful considering they've had a few years to get it set up.

Oh yeah... you're SO right about Windows Vista. It's just XP with some bits and bobs sellotaped on. I don't see why you need to upgrade to that to play games you can already play on the X-box 360.

The answer is easy for your statement Chromegloss55: people upgrade because
a/ Not everyone has X360
b/ DirectX 10 is nice and not supported by XP (which is the worst decision Microsoft had ever made)
c/ Even if someone has X360 there are definitely PC exclusive directx10 games.... and if you want to exploit new hardwares, you need that.

BUT I haven't upgraded to Vista yet, so XP rules :)

I hope I didn't misunderstand your statement.

Oh yeah... I understand what you mean, not everyone has an X-Box 360. But then, like you said, they should've made Direct X 10 XP-compatible. Instead they ommitted it so they'd have an extra selling feature for their otherwise bland Vista product.

I think that soon DX will disappear. ID software announced that they won't use DX 11, nor 10.1 or even 10 for DooM 4. They will use DX 9.0c and develop their game in OpenGL.

I haven't heard about that id comment... that's a sort of great news! If many developers would follow this idea, maybe this too quick change in video hardwares would stop or at least slow down, which means keeping your system up to date won't be as expensive. However, I feel that Microsoft, nvidia, ATI and such are still very strong, which means they won't let this happen. Directx will be used for much time, or if not, they will develop something else like directx and the sell it with another name, and this whole nasty competition and exploitation will go on. Maybe forever.

Yeah but intel wants to take a piece of the winnings cake from GPUs so they are planning to release GPUs too... That kinda complicates things.
In addition intel announced the creation of 8-core proccessors till the end of 2008 and want to create multicore systems with up to hundred or thousands of cores.

The initiative of ID software seems to be popular among many developers and they might follow in the future.

BTW: ATi 4870 FTW!!!

Dont care

Postby Harvester » Thu Aug 21, 2008 8:39 pm

I don't really care about intel's GPUs... for me nvidia is an alltime good choice, you just have to find which of their cards is the best in the price/quality ratio. But I understand that ATI also has some nice hardwares. However I can never afford the best ones from any of the manufacturers' goods, and I usually update hardwares in 2-3 years... nevermind.

About the manycore systems... seems to be a nice idea, for example for people who use rendering softwares, but I'm a bit curious about this. If I remember correctly AMD was the one to firstly 'invent' the truly quadcore CPUs, since Intel had only two dualcores put together.... so I don't know what to expect from them. Now I use a P4, but planning to change to AMD since that's cheaper and at least sounds better for me.

Hehe, I use P4, 2GB DDR1 memory and ATi X1650Pro AGP 256mb

My PC consumes 700MB of memory and 30% of CPU at idle condition.

Well I don't know exactly what's in my PC, all I know is that it's slow, it's performance is cruddy and it can't play any recent games that well.

I need a new PC, but I have this feeling that everytime you buy a PC, it's outdated ten minutes later. That's the main reason why I prefer games consoles, even though the PC has some great titles.

Hehe... I am gathering money for AM and a multicore processor (hopefully Intel's Core2Quad Q6600. It's the best processor that fits in my mobo).

I could use a better graphics card too, but my mobo supports AGP x8 cards and they don't worth the money because of their low chances of upgrade.
