MediaFire - Deceptive Practice? Alternatives?

Postby 3dgamer » Sat Mar 14, 2009 11:54 pm

Hi All,

I have been noticing that a number of members have been using MediaFire to release their games and demos. The only problem I have with it is that it seems to force you to go to their advertising pages first before you can download the game or demo. I use the word "force" because only if the poster knows or remembers to tell the player to uncheck the box in the advertisement first, will the player not be directed straight to the ad page.

I find this somewhat deceptive because when you go to a game download link, you don't expect to click the link and go to an entirely different page! I didn't even see the checkbox option until today. So this sort of appraoch does disturb me and the folk at MediaFire should make their approach more transparent by separating the download link from the advertisement link.

With that said, can anyone recommend any other upload site that can be used that doesn't use this sort of advertising tactic? (I don't use MegaUpload because of its tactics and questionable content as well).

Also, has anyone used YouSendIt? A while back I used to use something called Dropload but I think they are no longer in operation.

Thanks for all the help. :)

Hey..

I never noticed that..i get the link right away.. :?--on the left..click it and the exe starts..I click right where it says "here" in that sentence..Maybe i need another link to test it..a game from someone else or something.. do u have a popup blocker installed..cause there was a popup..but my blocker blocked it..

Another good one to use is ZShare, and I also like Filefront. :)

But they both have ads too..but u do get the option to "Skip this ad", which i think u might at Media..somewhere on the page..maybe..? I seem to get lucky with media fire..in terms of downloads..never noticed an add i was forced to click...

In my opinion http://www.filefront.com/ is pretty good, and many game creators host their games there.
You can upload files without registering, or you can create your own account for free if you decide to use it regularly.

Yeah, I click there too, but unless I uncheck the box, it brings me to the advertisement page first. Then I have to go back and then click the link again; only then will is start to download.

Yes, definitely check it out again with another link. I do have pop-up blockers enabled, but MediaFire's link seems to be a bit more insidious than that because it use the same hyperlink text as the link to the downloaded game. :( That's why I don't care for it.
