Vista/AM errors with ocx error, and Error code 0x80004005

Postby Kat12 » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:04 pm

Hi,
I'm new here, and I spent hours yesterday trying to solve what I thought would be a simple problem.

When I downloaded AM, it would download but as soon as it opened I'd get a "Getting Started" error saying "Component richtx32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."

So I read several pages of the tech posts here and googled the error and thought I had it solved, but then I got Error code 0x8004005; it says it (ocx) was loaded but the entry-point dllregisterserver was not found.
I tried running AM in XP compatibility mode and that didn't help. I redownloaded the program 3 times before I bought it, but then was afraid to redownload it again after buying it...can I just redownload it again and put in my key again? Or will that not help at all anyway?

I tried running as admin both in game properties and as a command prompt in windows. I tried copying the other, latest version of ocx and pasting it and renaming it.

I bought Regcure and ran scans.
I did so many things I can't even remember, lol.

The program wll run after I close the error message but it's limited; I can't use some of the plugins and trying to just crashes the game.
Sorry to go on and on but I just don't know how to fix this. Can it be fixed?
Thank you,
Kat

Hi, Kat and welcome to the forums.

This should not be a problem, as the program is the same weather you have purchased the full version or not.

However, I cannot help you with the Vista problems. (That will be up to GM-Support and others.)

ZW.
You have to make some to understand some.

Hi Kat, welcome to the forums :)
I'm sorry that you're having troubles with the ocx component.

Have you already tried to do the steps described here?

Hi Kat12...:)

Welcome to the forums..~

Code: Select all
regsvr32.exe %systemroot%\system32\RICHTX32.OCX

Go to Start menu and hit 'run',
Copy--[drag cursor over top of text--highlight it--- and hit Ctrl C--On your keyboard]

Then put cursor in the Run box and--- Ctrl V-- paste the exact code u see there and hit ok..

There is a space after the exe, which is why I say to copy and paste it..:)

Hope that helps...:)

Try this first...then if that doesn't work, try downloading zip file, hopefully u won't have too....~

Peace

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your help.

ZW, thank you for letting me know it should be OK to redownload.

Mercedes, thanks. I did that yesterday, and again today and it didn't help.

Mystery, I did do the steps you described; it didn't help. Thanks though.

When I do the things you suggested, I get error code 0x8002801c.

I googled that and followed the steps from several other forums and no luck.

At (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista ... ering.html)
a guy says (to someone else having the same problem):
"Have you tried registering it with UAC turned off?

msconfig > tools > disable UAC and reboot.

also have you tried it this way:

Start > run cmd and at the prompt enter each line:

cd c:\windows\system32
regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx "

Would I have to redownload the game to do this, and would it hurt my computer to turn off the UAC? I'm the only one who uses it, except when my friends visit, and I don't think they would hurt my computer.

Thanks again,
Kathy

Hi Kat,

You seem to be missing RICHTX32.OCX

I'm wondering why did you try this?
Start > run cmd and at the prompt enter each line:

cd c:\windows\system32
regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx

To register the RICHTX32.OCX, you should do this:

Start > run cmd and at the prompt enter each line:

cd c:\windows\system32
regsvr32 richtx32.ocx

Have you tried this aswell?

And have you tried to use "run" as administrator?

It could also be that if you have richtx32.ocx on your system, it is corrupted. You could rename it in order to keep a copy of it (e.g. richtx32a.ocx), then download a new copy, and try to register the new copy.

Woohoo; fixed ocx problem

Postby Kat12 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:31 am

Thanks everyone for your help.
I found a way to solve this problem easily. I got rid of the user account control but that didn't help, so I moved the entire AM folder to my desktop, and it works. Vista freaks out over ocx if games are loaded into C Program Files, so just take it out of there, lol, and it works.
I didnt' think of this myself; I read 6 zillion hints on google and someone, somewhere, suggested downloading games with ocx into Documents instead of Program Files because it's a way to get around the Vista problem...and it worked. Woohoo! I'm so excited.

So, I made a "game"...not really a game, more of an interactive slide show of our cottage, where I need help finding my key...I'd like to show some of my friends...how do I share it?

Thank you!
This is such a cool program; I'm so glad it works now...no more error messages and the "getting started" popup finally popped up, woohoo!

(Can you tell I'm happy, lol)

Kathy

PS: OMG, this game has led me to download so many other programs my head is spinning. I love Google sketchup...can I use things made there in here?

I'm happy to hear that you have been able to solve the problem :)
I also have Vista, and didn't have any problems yet. But sometimes some configurations produce strange results.

To share your game:
If you have the free version of AM, you can compile your game into an .am1 file. Upload it to your homepage or a free file host (if it's small, you can even send it as an e-mail attachment). Your friends need to download the free version of AM in order to play it.
If you have the full version of AM, create a standalone executable .exe file, upload it to your homepage or a free file host.

You can use artwork created with Google SketchUp. You just need to render your scene into a .jpg image, and import it to AM.

Hi Mystery,
Wow, you were lucky that you didn't have problems with yours.

I have the paid version; do I need a special sort of file host? I don't have a homepage, lol...at least I don't think I do.

I'm so happy to hear that I can use Google Sketch up. I'm having fun learning how to use it.

Can I somehow use my Sims2 games to make backgrounds? It's soooo easy to make 3D houses and landscapes in there; I keep thinking, if only there was a way to put the two programs together, lol..Sims 2 and AM.

Thanks,
Kathy

We have a list of free file hosts here:
http://www.adventuremaker.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=1302

But I would recommend you
http://www.filefront.com/

I don't think that you're allowed to use your Sims games for that reason, I have the strong feeling that this might be against their copyright terms. But I don't know it for sure.
Maybe you can find any information about this on their website to get a clear answer.

Yeah, using graphics from the Sims (1 or 2) is a no-no; that would be considered stolen art.

Since SketchUp is made specifically for creating models, and not to be played as a game, it's perfectly legal to use stuff you make with it in your games... unless you plan to sell your games, in which case you would probably need to buy the full version of SketchUp.

Hi Mystery,
Thank you so much for the list; I'll look through them.

I did take a look at filefront; it looks awesome but it looks like they're closing down. They have this message:

"We regret to inform you that we are forced to indefinitely suspend the FileFront site operations on March 30, 2009. If you have uploaded files, images or posted blogs, or if you would like to download some of your favorite files, please take this opportunity to download them before March 30th when the site will be suspended.

We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together. Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere ?thank you? for your support over the years and wish you all the very best.

Keep gaming alive,

FileFront Management and Team.

It's too bad as it seems like a great site; I wish I would have found it last year.

Hi Zenoc
Thanks for clearing that up about Sims 2. Too bad. Oh well, the Google sketchup site is a lot of fun; I'll just have to learn how to use it. I've already done several of the tutorials and can make a house with a veranda, lol.
Kathy

EDIT
Juhooworps, Sims2 is a 3D game made by EA Games. It's a lot of fun but it gets annoying because the sims always seem to need to use the toilet or bathtub, lol. Also, they throw fits and shake their fist at you if there house is messy and they're neat freaks. It's fun though...you can make characters that look like people you know and assign them character traits that resemble the people you know, and it's funny watching them interact.
Here's a link to their site if you're interested:
http://thesims2.ea.com/
One thing I really like is that people make Sims/objects/houses...even game mods, and share them; you can add tons of things for free. Sims3 is coming out in June, I think, and once it does you can probably pick up Sims2 really inexpensively.
Kathy

Oh no! :( That's really bad news about FileFront :(
What might have happened :?: I hope it's not an April's fool thingy...

@juhu
The Sims is a simulation game, in which you create your characters who live in a house, and manage their lives (find job, do chores, sleep, meet neighbors etc.). You have never heard of it? You can check it out here: http://thesims.ea.com/ if you're interested :)

EDIT: Man, it's like we're fighting to see who can explain this first!

The Sims is a top-seller and an all time classic. I used to play The Sims (the first game) when I was like 8 years old... :)
