Quite a while ago Candle made this neat little utility that rips the images out of an AVI file. I've been going back through some of my old stuff and it's allowed me to recover images that I otherwise might have lost.
So with Candle's permission, I'm reposting it here.

To use it, just click the exe file. Click start. Browse to the AVI file. Indicate the folder for the bitmap files and that's it. It works in seconds!

Probably the best solution is VirtualDub - marvelous freeware app for video editing. VD can export any movie to pictures sequence (bmp, targa, jpg, png) and to animated gif.
