Games for learning

Postby drummerac » Sat Dec 12, 2009 10:45 am

Hello everyone,, I asked Candle to setup this forum for anyone who is creating games for learning.

I am studying for my Masters at the moment and there is a huge amount of research done on serious games and games for learning in general. Have any of you created a game or are working on a game that can be used for learning?

I am working on one now for training aircraft technicians, Ill post it here when it is complete.

I wish I had a way to test how effective they are. I need a group that's not using it and a group that is using the game so I can see the difference.

The only thing I can verify is that the kids love the games and that most are getting the answers correctly by the time they are done.

Re: creating hidden object games

Greetings. Can you all help me to identify software for creating hidden object games. So far my research has identified Adventure Maker and Microsoft Silverlight 3.

Thanks.

You've come to the right place!

I'd strongly suggest using Adventure Maker and that's not a biased opinion! :D

Silverlight is nice, but even with a programming background, it would take a lot longer to build something that you could do with AM in a fraction of the time...especially, hidden object games...AM shines with those kinds of games. There are a couple AM users here that build them all the time. I'm sure they will chime in here soon!

Plus, you won't find a better support group then this forum!

I'd suggest getting the free version and trying it out. Look at some of the examples in the New Games area.

Welcome to the forums annette :)

If you are planning to develop hidden object games for download, Adventure Maker is certainly a very suitable and easy to use software that allows rapid development.

I agree with reneuend, check out the free version which will allow you to evaluate the advanced features of the full version (in projects with less than 20 frames).

Re: Hidden Object Games & Adventure Maker

Postby annette » Fri Jan 15, 2010 9:36 pm

Thanks for your warm welcome messages, reneuend and Mystery. I am a Legal Studies instructor and have begun some "serious game" projects. This is so much fun because I am limited only by my imagination.

Some of the software that I am currently using includes: Articulate Presenter, Daz 3D Studio, and Raptivity. I am working a lot with flash files and was wondering if the Adventure Maker hidden object game comes in a swf format. (Please forgive me if my question is elementary, but I am very new to the technology.)

I will explore Adventure Maker and let you all know what I think.

Best regards,

~Annette :)

As I said, Adventure Maker is most suitable for downloadable games (you can compile an .exe file with the full version), export to online formats (javascript based) is currently limited, and doesn't give you the possibility to use all advanced features (inventory system, usage of plugins, sounds, scripting etc.).

However, you can use (play) flash files in Adventure Maker with the Flash Plugin.

Thanks for the follow up information, Mystery. I am new to the terminology, so part of my time is spent deciphering you all's comments.

Have a great weekend.

Educational Games can be just as fun to create as a standard adventure,
Most people box them selves in with thinking directly of simulation, equation and word based games.

I have never developed a educational game (come to think of it I am still trying to make my very first game *turns red*). I did look into the idea of creating educational software though, I did a topic post "Tower of lost Time" storyline here in the forums which loosely can be considered educational.

http://www.adventuremaker.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=3706

Also after a recent visit to the Port Aurthur historical site I realized that it is quite possible to create games that are educational and factual, but retain a sense of a adventurous storyline, being that the historical site is a supposedly haunted convict settlement...

In reality any place of historical value can be used as long as factual references are used to heighten the gaming experience and teach the player about local lore.
Just PM me three things, a location, a time period and a item.

I will send you back a story line.

I agree MRM...It's actually what I would like to do in the future...possibly as my first commercial games. Oregon Trail was a great game in it's time. It gave you some idea of what the pioneers went through traveling across the U.S. frontier. I lack the ability to build the 3D imagery and I think people are too spoiled to enjoy 2D art!
