RTS? Wat program?

Postby chickens1127 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 12:33 am

Hi guys,

I love the Total War series. Extremely popular turn based and rts combat. Basically theres a campaign map, just like a TB, with daplomicy and war and moving of army and all. And then when a battle starts, it's an amazing 3d RTS where you control armies of thousands.

If you like the sound, IT'S AWESOME, and this week like $3 on steam. For the price of a McDonalds lunch( :) ), you can have dozens of hours of fun.
Link to the newest one, 18th century, Napoleon comes out in a week(pre ordered on steam for extra units).

So what program would I use if I wanted to make a RTS- just the battle portion. Much more simplified, 2d, but RTS. Not AM, since real time would be impossible. Any ideas. Very simple. Just in the beginning, choice of three armies and you get the choice of 3 enemy armies. No choice inunits.

TY

Everything depends on how much effort you want to put in it...
You may code it from scratch, but I guess that' not what you want :)
If you have the wits for some advenced logics to say so, you may try any general game building programes, like Multimedia Fusion 2, Games Factory, Gamemaker, etc. There are quite many.
I don't know of any specifically RTS builder programs.

Maybe you can get some ideas from here:
http://www.devmaster.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5175
Although that thread is already pretty old, some of the suggested engines might still be around :)

I've also seen that Crystal Space advertises itself as being suitable for RTS games:
http://www.crystalspace3d.org
(I don't know it at all, but you could take a look)

Also FIFE does advertise itself as suitable for RTS games:
http://wiki.fifengine.de/Frequently_answered_questions

And it seems that somebody has indeed managed to make an RTS with Game Maker:

Game maker

Gamemaker, MMF, all these easy to use engines are capable of making virtually any sort of 2D games, everything depends on how you trick them into doing so :) By clever use of available commands, scripting (if possible; Gamemaker has quite easy language, while MMF doesn't come with one as far as I know) anything's possible. I thought the same way you do when I started looking at them, but after some experimenting, I have an MMF basic project made for action games with fully destructible environments, sort of an ai, burning system with spreading flames, all that you may expect from a modern shooter but in 2d.... and I came to the conclusion that nothing's impossible.
