Vista Error Message on Every Frame

Postby CBSection31 » Sat May 08, 2010 8:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm having a customer encounter an error in my game on Vista, and I'm hoping you can shed some light on it. On every frame, the game pops up two error messages.

The first states that the scripting engine returned the following error: Automation Error.

The second states: Error Description: Component_ObjectEvent.Automation error.

If he clicks OK, then the game works fine...until going to another frame, when the same errors pop up again. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You should always install as an administrator.
Did the user do that? If not tell him to do so.
And all AM developers should include this instruction in the readme file or the manual of their games.

This was my first suggestion to CBSection31, but it was apparently the case. And special info/instructions for Vista are provided by CBSection31 :)
My second guess was that something (maybe antivirus or other security application) might have prevented to register a component properly during installation. This can happen sometimes, too, if registry changes are blocked by a security application.
As far as I'm informed reinstallation and manual registration was unsuccessful as well, the customer however refuses to switch off security applications during installation.

Do you also think that it might be a registry issue?

I'm out of ideas, because there are no issues on other German (or for that matter also other language versions) Vista (also on mine which is also German version of Vista).

Yes, the user installed as an administrator. Also, everything Mystery said is correct. Any ideas? :?

Hmm let me think... is there any plugin with an ocx used or referred to in every frame of your game? maybe that ocx isn't installed correctly, eventually causing the automation error.

Keyguard, Particle plus and rain generator are some of the plugins that could cause that because they use ocx files.
Also, does sound work for him?

I'm not using any plug-ins on every frame. He says that yes, the sound works. This is so odd!

Is there any chance he can run the game in a different compatibility mode..?
...I no longer have one in front of me to test it on....
Is it just a handful of Vista users....?

This is so odd!

Truth be told..not really..there have been other issues with Vista users..64 bit..:(

Normally i would say this was a sound issue[Players] or plug-in for sure...Or videos..that play sounds..[have sound in-bedded in them]

It's just one particular user. Every other Vista user I've had so far has reported that it works fine--on both 32-bit and 64-bit. So it has to be something particular to this person's computer.

My best guess is that he has some kind of security software that he is not disabling that is preventing files from getting registered. The error happens on every frame, so I don't think it's related to video files. Sound, perhaps.

Are you using a special codec? Perhaps this codec isn't installed right.

I am using a special codec, but he already confirmed that it's installed properly. Video files play in Media Player.
