Difference between Trailer and Intro?

Postby reneuend » Fri Jan 02, 2015 10:31 pm

I've spent the last 2 weeks working on animation for the intro to my new game. Basically, it sets the scene and helps the user understand what's going on and their position within the story. So, what should a good trailer show without giving away too much? I'm struggling with this.

In my opinion, mostly, trailer should advertises a game! For me, what is important for each treyler is that should contain the mystery and at the same time to be intriguing and to attract, in this case, the players! For the game should contain a brief introduction to the story and actors as well as perhaps navigation (for this I'm not sure). While the intro, should introduce you to the game depending on the story. It's how the game opens. It can be a cutscene or an interactive sequence - basically whatever happens when you first start the game.

Thank you, Skype. I agree with your assessment. I know what I need for the introduction, but I was having trouble understanding what to do with the trailer. I didn't want it to be a rehash of the introduction.
Here is what I am getting from your post for a proper trailer.

    Advertise
    Intrigue (create an attraction)

Your point about the navigation got me thinking. As a trailer for a computer game is different than for a movie because the features for how to play the game, the AI, controls, etc, might need to be included. So, I might expand the list to include these.

    Advertise
    Intrique (create an attraction)
    Player interaction (game controls)
AI (how the game interacts with the player)
    Environment (sound effects, graphics, animation)
    Puzzles (game play)

Now, if we can dig up examples of what are some good ones to use as model for our own, that would be perfect! I'm going to look at youtube and see if I can find any that I think are good examples. Please post if you find any and add any comments of why you think its a good example.

I found this as an example, but I really don't think I agree with their assessment. What do you think?

One of the most memorable trailers for me was Dead Island. I think its because they made it so touching out of something so gruesome! Warning!!! Don't watch it if you don't care for gore. The only problem with it is that it didn't really tell you how the game play would be done, it was just....memorable!

Note: if you get an error, just click on [F5] key to reload and it should work.

Also, I think our own member, Simon, did an excellent job with his trailer for ASA: A Space Adventure. I noticed he is rebuilding it in a different engine now for better graphics, etc (makes me wish AM would get updated).

I've never know how to build a trailer. I just did it to show some gameplay. I never tried to make something professional thought...
