Introducing 3D Picture Browser (Public Beta now available)

Postby GM-Support » Sun May 14, 2006 12:47 am

Hi all,

While I am still working on Adventure Maker, I am also happy to announce the release of a brand new product that is very different from any software that you have seen so far.

It is called 3D Picture Browser, and, as the name suggests, it allows browsing the folders on your computer and viewing the pictures that it contains. While there are hundreds of products to do that, this is the only one that features a real-time 3D user interface.

3D interfaces are very common in today's games, but they are seldom used in applications (this is bound to change - see Mac OSX Tiger and Windows Vista). While this product is still in the beta stage, its concept is absolutely unique, and it will certainly impress your friends and relatives.

The controls are very simple: there are no scrollbars, no double-clicks, no right-clicks, just move the mouse and single-click with the left mouse button to open a folder or to view a photo. When you are viewing a photo, you can view the next one by moving the mouse up and clicking on the next photo.

Here are two screenshots:

DOWNLOAD:
You can download the first version (Public Beta v0.14 freeware) from the following location (1MB):
DOWLOAD LINK REMOVED BECAUSE OF A NEWER VERSION AVAILABLE FROM: http://www.adventuremaker.com/3dpicturebrowser

INSTALLATION NOTES:
- To install the program, please launch the Setup.exe that is included in the zip file that you have downloaded.
- If you don't have the .NET Framework 2.0 yet, the setup program will automatically download it and install it. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can download it from here and install it separately.
- The latest build of DirectX 9 is required. If the program does not start or you get an error message after the initial dialog, please download Direct 9 from here and (re)install it.

Have fun, and please post your first impressions and suggestions.

Nice, it does distort the pictures some if they are real big.
Fun to play with.

Thanks.
You are right, the aspect ratio is not preserved when in zoom mode. I will fix it in the next version.

Hi GM,

It's like I've travelled through time and I'm using a brandnew futuristic interface. Incredible and it works so smooth :D

I'm very impressed... how do you come up with stuff like this ?

I will use it for sure !

Kind regards,

Hi ShadowHunter,

Thanks a lot! I am glad you like it!

It was created with the freeware Visual C# 2005 Express Edition, together with the free DirectX 9 SDK. The former includes a great help document with lots of examples, and the latter includes several sample projects that you can immediately open with C# and modify.

I love the 2005 Express Editions, because they are free, light and fast, they provide "Edit and Continue" feature (like VB6), and the .NET Framework 2005 has so many functions that you will never make API calls again.

It would be too much work to convert Adventure Maker to .NET (more than 50 000 lines of code), but if I have time I will try to write a tutorial for creating plugins for AM that are developed with Visual C# or other .NET languages. However, this is not very simple because MS has abandoned the "COM ActiveX components" and they now work with ".NET components" instead.

Thanks again!

Best regards,
GM-Support
P.S. Please feel free to send suggestions if you have any.

Hey Dude

Very, very nice program. I like the style and design and with a few modifications you could definately put that forward at microsoft or probably apple for an OS app. The only problem I really had with it was that the title of the image was getting in the way of the image a little bit, and maybe an extra zoom layer (look at the image and then make it full screen sort of thing) would be a nice touch.
Awesome stuff though and I'll probably be using it to file through my concept art! :D

Lovely proggie. However, it'd be nice to be able to scroll through the pictures without having to "leave" a particular picture, maybe with the mouse wheel or W and A.

Every time I try to load 3D Picture Browser, it gives me an error message and asks me if I want to send or not send mail to Microsoft about the problem. This happens even though I have the latest version of DirectX 9.

I just installed the .NET Framework. It didn't help.

Here is a picture of the error:

Hmmm, that doesn't give away much about the error type :(
But in such cases you can take a look in the Event Viewer in your System Folder (which you can access through the Control Panel).
Maybe there is more information about it (like error number etc.) that can reveal more about it...
