EZTalk: Audio under Vista

Postby ShadowHunter » Sat Mar 10, 2007 12:35 am

Hi all,

For all who is looking towards the future... like it or not Vista is the thing to focus on... I have been using this OS for 8 weeks and, despite with you of what you may have read, it is super and stable.

As you might know AM works under Vista except for audio and video

As a dedicated member I'm working on a work-around and with big succes :D

I will be using this thread to keep you informed on my progress...

10/03/2007

I succesfully upgraded "EZTalk" to "EZTalk Vista" and was able to play all sounds under Vista 8)... using EZTalk means some lines of code... the original AM sound system does NOT work under Vista: PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND... I CANNOT CHANGE THIS

I'm looking for ALPHA testers who have Vista and XP available, please send me a PM to participate. You will be the first to receive EZTalk Vista.

New updates comming soon :P

Kind regards,

ShAdOwHuNtEr

Hi all,

10/03/2007

Bad news... some events won't work on Vista for some reason, the most important one is the "EndStream" detection. It seems audio files are played but get interrupted just before they should end resulting in no "EndStream" event.

Also found out the everthing in AM works very, very slow under Vista. Playing audio with EZTalk Vista works but with some delay, also the waiting circle is shown which is not wanted.

At this point I'm afraid the application should be written in VB.NET Framework 3... I have no experience with this nor do I have the proper software.

Not sure if AM will ever work properly unless it completely re-coded... I hope I'm wrong.

Kind regards,

That's too bad ...

These backward compatibility issues make me think of the title of the X-Files movie, "Fight the Future".

AM runs slowly on Vista. Does this mean that the games run slowly too (besides for the audio problem)?

Do you think that it somehow someday can be possible to run all older AM games on Vista?

Lots of questions, I know, but I'm sure that there are many of us that are very concerned about this.

Regards,

Mikael

Hi Mikael,

It's not only AM, lots of commercial games play slow on Vista. I have no idea what MS has done or changed.

You can play AM games but I found that there is a small delay in transitions, clicking hotspots etc...

I continue to work on EZTalk in the hope I find a solution.

If the AM engine can be made for Vista and full compatible with the current resource files then it should be possible to play old games. However this is something that GM has to decide.

Kind regards,

Hi all,

I managed to find a work around for the "EndOfStream" detection however for some reason the sounds cuts of 1 second before the end of the audio file.

Time between clicking a hotspot a audio playing takes too long in my opinion.

Downloading the SDK Software development kit for Vista right now. I will do a test in a trial version of Visual Studio 2005... let's hope it works !

If it does than it will only work on computers with the .NET framework installed. Please keep this in mind.

Kind regards,

ShAdOwHuNtEr

Hi all,

13/03/2007

New update, after Candle's great tip to use FMOD I start experimenting. Most things went well. To bad their forum is not very supportive and I can't overcome a problem during design but during runtime it seems to work.

I have looked even further to find a similar package called BASS this seems to work perfectly for me. I will start doing more tests.

This might actually work, including OGG support.

Stay tuned for updates...

With best regards,

I was going to say Bass next if you had problems with the fmod.
Hope you can get this working.

Hi Candle,

Yeah, you sure pushed me in the right direction :D

I'm sure FMOD or BASS will do the trick... I have a few busy weeks to come so I can only work a few hours a day on it.

I prefere BASS for the moment (only 100Kb DLL) which seems to have very easy commands and it doesn't make VB crash everytime :P

Again, thanks for the help Candle, I would not have found it by myself... did you already knew them ? Or did you Google it ?

Kind regards,

I knew about them from before and doing things with the computer and just playing with stuff.
I'm always doing something just to see what it can do. lol

Dear friends,

I have made a hard decision. As it seems the forums are dead and no further development is happening on AM I too will seize my activities on any further development.

I will stay active on the forum and still offer support but no new plug-ins will be developed by me until new activity is seen on AM.

I?m sorry for who has set their hope on this new plug-in but I cannot find myself motivated for the moment. I?m sure you can understand.

I really hope that GM will give a sign of life real soon.

With kind regards,

I have something I want to do but need to talk to him soon about it.
Should be cool for everyone that likes to make games.

Hi all,

GOOD NEWS :D

EZTalk is now compatible with the latest release of AdventureMaker and works great under Vista 8)

You don't have to download anything new... the new files included in AM make EZTalk work again.

Thanks GM for the detailed information.

Enjoy !
